Uniform

In common with most other schools in the province, Larne Grammar School prescribes a school uniform specific to the school.  Uniform has the advantage of reducing competition in dress while at the same time promoting a degree of conservatism which is a trait highly regarded by prospective employers.  Pupils are expected to wear the uniform in the prescribed manner in order to develop the habit of a neat and tidy appearance.  Details of the expected standards are transmitted to pupils by the class tutor.  Pupils must observe the school regulations regarding dress, including going from and coming to school.  They must wear the prescribed 'games wear' appropriate to the activity concerned and while representing the school on any occasions, e.g. Saturday morning games.

'Uniform' also extends to the type and nature of the hair style adopted by both girls and boys.  Here again the operative word is 'conservative'.  Boys' hair should not be excessively long, i.e. it should not extend beyond the collar at the back nor beyond the eyebrows at the front while at the side the ears should be visible.  Nor should it be excessively short, i.e. it should not be open to confusion with a skinhead style haircut (minimum No 3).  The general principle is that no pupils, boys or girls, should adopt styles which differ excessively from the generally accepted norms as determined by the school management.

The items prescribed in the uniform list are reviewed from time to time and, if necessary, amended after consultation with pupils, parents and staff. A uniform list is supplied to all parents of new pupils and is also available in the General Office.
