Introduction to Larne Grammar School from the Principal This year Larne Grammar School celebrates its 125th Anniversary and we are delighted to be able to mark the occasion with a few special events throughout the year. One of the more lasting mementos will be the publication of a book which we hope will acknowledge the first 100 years (already well documented) but will concentrate on the past 25 years. We would love to hear from anyone who has left within the past 25 years or who has achieved something notable during those years. We would be interested not only in your achievements but also your memories of the school. The influence of Larne Grammar School should not be underestimated and not just in the Larne area. Past pupils are spread throughout every corner of the world in every profession; science, medicine, education, technology, religion, music, drama and the Arts. The vast majority speak fondly of their time at school and appreciate not just the academic education they received but also the pastoral care, the careers advice, the camaraderie and the acquisition of skills they required to make their way in the world. Almost every year a group of pupils organise a reunion (usually to celebrate 20, 30 or 40 years) and these are always memorable occasions as past pupils catch up with their fellow pupils, some for the first time since they left school. Since 2004 a reunion for pupils who left in 1941 has taken place and this has always been a special occasion for me given that my dad is part of that group. This year will be particularly special marking a 70 year reunion. To be the ninth Principal of the school is an absolute privilege. To be able to assist in the development of young minds and to see individuals develop into bright, young, articulate adults is unique. To see them progress through life provides a sense of pride that cannot be put into words. I hope to see you at some of the events planned – remember it will probably be another 25 years before there will be another such celebration and who knows where we will be then. I look forward to meeting you. |
