The School Librarian Recommends

This novel tells the story of Afghanistan over the last forty years. Seen through the eyes of two women: Mariam, born illegitimately and living with her mother as an outsider until she gets married off to violent bully, Rasheed, after her mother’s suicide, and Laila, growing up in Mariam's neighbourhood in Kabul until a stray rocket destroys her house and kills her parents, and who joins Mariam and Rasheed's household and becomes his second wife.

Against the backdrop of war and ever changing political climate in Afghanistan these women learn very quickly to adapt to the harsh environment and to their brutal husband.

I would recommend this book to those over the age of fifteen and to both boys and girls.
