Description of Department:

The ICT/Computing Department has grown rapidly over the past few years, with increasing numbers at GCSE and A level.

All pupils study ICT in year 8, with pupils being introduced to the computer facilities available in school.  We also try to ensure that pupils have the required basic skills, such as being able to word process, use a spreadsheet and database, produce a PowerPoint presentation and effectively search the Internet.  During Key Stage 3, these core skills will be used in other subject areas.

All pupils study GCSE ICT in Key Stage 4.  This course provides valuable skills in using Microsoft Office as well as looking at computers from a more theoretical viewpoint.  Nearly all pupils enjoy the coursework, worth 60% of the final mark, and the results have been excellent in the last few years.

We have recently introduced A level ICT and this proved a popular course, with over twenty pupils sitting their final module in June 2009.  This has led to a reduction in the number of pupils studying Computing, but it is hoped that the availability of both subjects will lead to a significant improvement in examination performance.  Offering ICT allows us to cater for students wishing to continue with ICT post GCSE whilst Computing is an excellent foundation for those wishing to study computers at university.
