GCSE: Year 11 – 12 GCSE History is an agreeable subject for students with suitable English skills and an interest in exploring the events that have shaped our world. The course chosen by Larne Grammar allows students to study Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918 - 41, Britain, Ireland and Northern Ireland from 1932-49, and the Cold War. All pupils are entered for the GCSE Higher Tier (CCEA), the learning then being assessed in two structured external examinations of 2 hours and 1 hour 15 minutes respectively. These are taken at the end of Year 12. This external assessment is currently supplemented by a Controlled Assessment. Somewhat similar to coursework, this task has now to be completed in Larne Grammar School in controlled conditions reminiscent of a traditional examination. 'A' Level: Year 13 & 14 GCE History is a challenging but enjoyable subject for students with suitable English skills and an interest in exploring important historical events. It is suitable only for those with a top grade in GCSE History. The current 'A' Level requires students to take examinations at the end of Year 13 and Year 14. Year 13: Advanced Subsidiary (AS) AS1 - Historical Investigations and Interpretations: Germany, 1918-1945. The 1 hour 30 minute external examination is taken at the end of Year 13 and is worth 25% of the final A Level grade. AS2 - Conflict and Change in Europe: Italy, 1914 1943. The 1 hour 30 minute external examination is taken at the end of Year 13 and is worth 25% of the final A Level grade. Year 14 A2:1 – Change over Time: Clash of Ideologies, 1900 – 2000. The 1 hour 15 minute external examination is taken at the end of Year 14 and is worth 20% of the final A Level grade. A2:2 – Historical Investigations and Interpretations: Partition of Ireland, 1900 – 1925. The assessment is by means of a 2 hours external examination at the end of the academic year and the paper is worth 30% of the final A Level grade. |
