Home Economics helps to develop skills for life. All pupils study Home Economics at Key Stage 3 and may select to continue at GCSE, AS and A level. Key Stage 3Opportunities are provided to learn about healthy eating and to develop practical food preparation skills. Aspects of home and family life are explored to develop an understanding of the importance of the family as a caring unit. Independent living skills are also developed and pupils learn the importance of becoming discerning consumers and effective managers of resources. Pupils are rewarded for their food knowledge and cooking capabilities when they take part in the Active Kids Get Cooking Award Scheme. Pupils learn about the importance of a healthy diet and exciting ways to put their knowledge into practice. The Northern Ireland revised curriculum is followed. Some topics that we cover include:
GCSE Home Economics:
Home
Economics focuses on nutrition, food choice, diet and health within the
context of home and family. Students gain knowledge and understanding of
nutritional advice, the nutritional needs of family members throughout
their life and of diet-related conditions such as cancers and coronary
heart disease.Through studying Home Economics, students learn how to
think critically, make informed choices, develop practical food skills
and manage resources. Many students go on to study GCE Home Economics..
AS/A Level: The modular CCEA GCE specification is followed. Students with Home Economics qualifications may go on to have interesting and rewarding careers in teaching, dietetics, consumerism, product development, environmental health, food technology, nutrition, marketing, journalism, social work and catering.
