Organisation of Education

Religious Education

Religious Education is accepted as an important area of study which contributes to each pupil's full development and is reflected in the ethos of the school. All pupils have the opportunity to study Religious Education where the main focus is on Christianity.  Pupils in Key Stage 3 follow the North-Eastern Education & Library Board's recommended syllabus which is based on the Church's Religious Education Core Syllabus.  Pupils in Key Stage 4 also follow the Core Syllabus which is directly linked to the GCSE course. Cross-Curricular themes including EMU, Cultural Heritage, Careers and Health Education are incorporated in a religious context and the subject is taught by specialist teachers. All pupils are entered for CCEA RE (Short Course) unless they are sitting the full GCSE exam. Although it is expected that most, if not all, pupils will attend Religious Studies classes and assembly, it is recognised that some parents may wish to withdraw their children from these activities and, when this occurs, alternative supervisory arrangements are made for the children concerned.
